Butte Creek team builds stronger connections with Spanish-speaking parents

Georgenne Kuenzi has been working hard to make sure that Spanish-speaking parents at Butte Creek Elementary are connected to the school. Ms. Kuenzi, an English Language Development Assistant, carries a school-issued smart phone that she uses to text parents in Spanish and respond to questions via text or phone. This allows her to work in the classroom with students without being called out to answer phone calls.

“It’s been wonderful connecting with families in this way. Our goal is to make sure they know they are welcome and valued here at school,” said Kuenzi. We have high expectations of all our students, so providing the parents with our expectations of them, and our school policies in their native language is important.”

According to Ms. Kuenzi, there are 26 families,(43 students) who now receive regular text updates with important information pertaining to school and can contact her with questions and concerns.  She is hoping to grow the program to include all families who wish to receive communication in Spanish.

To promote the program, she has created magnets for each family with the cell phone number and an invitation to connect. The cards say:

“La Escuela Butte Creek” (Butte Creek School)
