Superintendent’s Message – June 2017

Here we are at the end of another successful school year and I want to take a moment to say thank you.  It’s been a year of change, especially for staff members, students and parents at Silverton Middle School, Mark Twain Elementary and Robert Frost School.  I have been inspired by the flexibility and understanding required by everyone during this unique time in our school district.  I’d also like to thank our community for their support. We are lucky to have strong partnerships with local community members and business leaders who advocate for our kids. In this newsletter, you will read about how the Silver Falls School District community has stepped in to champion our STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Math) and art programs. You will also learn how local seniors are connecting with our middle school students and showing them that our communities care about kids and education.

Our SFSD family
We continued to watch our mission come to life throughout the district this year.  There will always be room to grow but the evidence is clear — we are experiencing higher and sustained graduation rates, subgroup performance increases at all levels and student growth in the areas of STEM, the arts, activities, athletics and academics.   The school district team is continuously working to better understand and address the emotional needs of our students. As we move into next year we will stay focused on strengthening our internal support programs and partnerships with local health and human service providers. I look forward to leading our efforts through the lens of equity and access for all students. These are all staples of this school district and we get better each year.

Administrative changes
Next year we welcome three principals to their new positions — Brett Davisson as the new principal for Silverton Middle School, Wade Lockett as the new principal for Silverton High School and Therese Gerlits as the new principal at Butte Creek School. We also welcome two new school board members, Jennifer Traeger and Shelly Nealon, to the SFSD team. We look forward to their contributions.

Thanks to everyone for their support and partnership. Have a wonderful summer break.
