Back to School Message from Andy Bellando

There’s a lot of change and transformation underway for our SFSD students and staff and I’m proud to say that we’re ready to take on the new school year! Our team has been working exceptionally hard over the past several months to ensure that we were prepared to welcome students last week. I’d also like to thank our neighbors and community partners for being flexible and understanding through such a unique summer of facility changes.

We start this new school year welcoming 17 new teachers and many new classified staff members to our team. We also said goodbye to some valued team members who have moved on to new career opportunities or taken positions closer to their homes. Along with the many changes and transformations taking place, we have some fundamental things that will remain the same including our welcoming culture of pride, innovation, flexibility, collaboration, and resourcefulness as well as support for students and each other.

In addition to having great learning environments, our visioning goals are showing a lot of growth. Here are a few examples:

• STAR reading and math results at the K-8 level are up as much as 5% over last year
• Kindergarten results took a full 3 percent jump district wide to 95% achievement
• More than 95% of our high school freshman were on track to graduate at the end of last year as measured by at least 6 credits earned – up from 93% the year before
• We are experiencing a full 6% improvement in student attendance – as measured by those students having nine absences or more in a school year.

While we still have work to do in all of these areas, our efforts are paying off. I’m looking forward to another great year of success. Thanks again for your partnership in making Silver Falls School District a great place to learn and grow.
