Silver Falls School District staff and students spent a week focusing on crisis and emergency response training. The training was done in partnership with the Silverton Police Department, Silverton Fire District and the Marion County Sheriffs Department. The goal is to prepare everyone – including community members — to respond to a crisis situation with uniform procedures.
As part of the week, our team completed a Standard Safety Response Protocol. The protocol, provided by the nonprofit I Love U Guys Foundation, was inspired by the father of a young girl who was tragically killed by a gunman in 2006 at Platte Canyon High School in Colorado. The Foundation works to bring communities and schools together to create a common language and response plan for crisis situations.
The training will continue all year and is being rolled out at schools throughout the district. Parents are encouraged to ask their children what they’ve learned and discuss how to respond in an emergency or crisis situation.
